Ronald Redwing is the Public Relations Strategist, Founder and CEO of The Redwing Group in Memphis. PRSA Memphis asked Redwing a few questions about the things, people and occurrences that shaped his career.
What is your job title, where do you work, and how long have you worked there? I am the Founder and CEO of The Redwing Group, and we're celebrating twenty-five (25) years in business this year!
What is one of your favorite industry trends, and why?
One of my favorite industry trends is public policy and advocacy. I enjoy this area of work because it allows me to focus on issues I'm passionate about, such as economic empowerment, diversity and equity in business opportunities, and mentoring.
What is the best advice you can give PR graduates?
The best advice I can give PR graduates is to focus on matters they're passionate about. The most important advice I can give-Stay focused!
What was the defining moment in your career that affirmed your professional status/positioning as a practitioner?
I had several defining moments in my career that affirmed my professional status as a practitioner. The first was being responsible for the media relations for the funeral of Danny Thomas while I was Director of Communications and Public Relations for the Catholic Diocese of Memphis. At the time, I was a recent college graduate and new in the position. I remembered Mr. Thomas as a famous actor but I was most familiar with his work at St. Jude because I lived less than three blocks from the burgeoning hospital at the time. However, and most importantly, I recognized his sincere desire to provide care for all children and families because a few friends were patients at the hospital and received the best treatment possible!
Another defining moment for me was providing similar services for Mother Teresa of Calcutta during her visit to Memphis in the late 80's. Much like Mr. Thomas funeral, her visit was a national event which drew national media coverage and attention. and I was responsible for everything from developing the press releases, coordinating news conferences to giving her a tour of Memphis! I often ask friends jokingly-"how many people do you know (from North Memphis) that has met a Saint or two"? Lol...
Lastly, another defining moment was Working in the campaign and administration of the first elected African American Mayor of Memphis. This was truly a historic occasion for Memphis and me as I continued my journey towards my professional career as a practitioner. Later I served as Director of Corporate Affairs for Methodist Healthcare and afterwards started my own business.
