Shannon Little Briggs began her career as the first Marketing and Events Coordinator for Huey’s Restaurants, making the switch to full-time self-employment in 2015. Since then, she has worked with over 50 organizations on their marketing, helping spread the word about the businesses and nonprofits making an impact in their community. With a life-long passion for Memphis, Briggs’ mission is to make her city the best it can be by bringing focus to small businesses and nonprofits in the area. Briggs has won multiple awards for work on local client campaigns, including six PRSA VOX awards in 2018 and nine PRSA VOX awards in 2021. Over the years, her insight and work have been featured in Fast Company, Freelancer’s Union, and various local publications.

A lifelong Memphian and veteran freelancer with over thirteen years of experience, Briggs is growing from solo entrepreneurship to leading a team of six talented professionals, each with their own area of expertise. She founded Campfire Collective, a brand and a mission reflecting a commitment to shine a light on Memphis small businesses and nonprofits.

PRSA Memphis recently asked Shannon to offer her insight or words of advice to those looking to branch out.

What is your job title, where do you work, how long have you worked there?
Shannon Briggs, Founder & Head Trailblazer for Campfire Collective. I have been freelancing for 10+ years, but I have been doing it full-time since November 2015.

What is one of your favorite industry trends, and why?
I love seeing local businesses partner together on social media for different projects, whether it's a combined Instagram giveaway, a virtual fundraising event, or something else. I've always thought, especially here in Memphis, that there is much more to gain by seeing others as partners instead of competitors. We can do so much more together instead of in our own silos, and I love seeing the impact play out.

Why did you choose freelancing instead of a traditional career path?
I actually started in a traditional career path and then switched to freelancing. I loved the idea of creating something from the ground up, having a sense of ownership over it, and making it my own. Plus, I love the flexibility of my schedule, picking projects and clients that I connect with, and collaborating with so many inspiring people.

What advice would you give to aspiring freelancers?
Find what you do really well, and capitalize on that. You don't need to be everything to everyone. Being the best you can be at what you truly love to do is one of the best ways to grow your reputation, and it's much more fun that way too!

What is your favorite local publication?
I'm a big fan of Storyboard Memphis.
