After a two-year hiatus, PRSA Memphis hosted the 26th Annual VOX Awards to a welcome crowd on Nov. 4. The VOX Awards recognize outstanding contributions made by public relations professionals and practitioners in the Memphis and Mid-South. Sponsored by the Downtown Memphis Commission, the event was held at Wiseacre Brewery Downtown.

This year, the event honored a diverse group of individuals, public relations agencies, educational institutions, government and non-profit organizations. Entries were judged independently by communications professionals in the PRSA West Virginia Chapter.

Bentley “Chip” Washington, PIO for the Shelby County Health Department’s COVID-19 Response Team, served as the night’s emcee. Washington is also the host of Real Talk with Chip Washington on WYXR Memphis 91.7 FM.

“Bringing back the VOX Awards after two years was so important to our local public relations community,” said VOX Chair, Amelia Ables. “VOX is a time for us to come together and celebrate the incredible, meaningful work happening in Memphis every day, and it felt great to be back.”

DCA took home the Best in Show honors for their work on the Discover Memphis Naturally Campaign. The judges commended the campaign for its integrated use of traditional and social media. While launched to generate more tourism during the pandemic, the campaign generated continued success for the organization, creating public awareness both locally and nationally for the betterment of the area economy.

“It was an honor to celebrate our peers in the industry who have excelled and made outstanding contributions to the PR industry in Memphis and the Mid-South,” Milton Howery, III, PRSA Memphis Chapter President.

In addition to Best in Show and VOX award for Discover Memphis Naturally campaign, DCA also won awards for its Liberty Park Campaign, Downtown Dining Week 2020, Downtown Memphis Commission Annual Report, the#BackDowntown Campaign, and ArtsMemphis campaigns "Invest in the Arts” and “ArtsWeek.”

KQ Communications was honored for their campaigns for LeMoyne-Owen College, Goodness Gracious Cookies, and Big Brothers Big Sisters of the MidSouth. The agency also earned VOX awards for its “Saving the UPPs,” and “Sam’s ABCs” work.

Shannon Briggs took home several VOX and Gold awards for the Welcome to Memphis COVID-19 Fund, Laid Off Lawncare Launch, and Commute Coaching.

inferno earned Gold Awards for work on the SMartCan Media Campaign, and BLDG Memphis Affordable Housing Trust Fund Campaign and op-ed, “CDCs can be so much more affordable than housing agencies.”

For its internal communications on COVID-19 information, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital earned a VOX Award for Employee/Internal Communications.

Cmdr. Matt Knight, with the Navy Personnel Command Public Affairs, won a Gold for its crisis communications campaign “Managing PCs During a Global Pandemic.”

Palmer Home for Children won the VOX for Best Annual Report, while University of Tenn. Health Science Center won for its UTHSC College of Medicine Magazine Summer 2021 issue. The Palmer Home for Children also secured the VOX for feature and profile writing.

“It was a celebration, but it was also a much-needed reunion of PR professionals in the Memphis area who haven't had the opportunity to see each other in person because of the pandemic,” Howery said.
